Technology-enabled crime encompasses:
The Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995, Part 10.7 - Computer Offences, legislates against activities such as:
- computer intrusions (e.g. malicious hacking).
- unauthorised modification of data, including destruction of data.
- Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks.
- Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks using botnets.
- the creation and distribution of malicious software (e.g. viruses, worms, trojans).
Each state and territory in Australia has its own legislated computer-related offences which are similar to the Commonwealth legislation.
If you have information about possible terrorist activity or have seen or heard something suspicious that may need investigation by security agencies, please contact the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.
The National Security Hotline is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is operated by trained staff and experienced advisers from a wide range of backgrounds, including police, security and the military.
Reports are immediately passed on to the relevant police or security agency. All information is confidential and callers may remain anonymous if they wish.
If there is a real and imminent threat to your personal safety, or you feel that the community is in immediate danger, you should report this by dialling '000'. '000' should only be dialled if you need emergency assistance from police, fire or ambulance. Emergencies are life-threatening or time-critical situations that require a rapid response.
If the matter does not involve immediate danger to personal safety then it should be reported to the National Security Hotline (1800 123 400). Further information is located on the National Security Australia website.
Call your local police to report a crime or to receive general advice about local security and safety issues in your community.
When required, the AHTCC assists relevant agencies in Australia and overseas to further their investigations into issues of national security.
